If your department or program is interested in registering a federal trademark, please review the following information and fill out the Trademark Registration Inquiry below.  

There is a cost to file an application and maintain the registration with the USPTO which will be paid by the department registering the mark. Our office utilizes outside counsel to handle all registrations with the USPTO and all follow-up and maintenance. In order to maintain the registration, you will have to prove that you are still using the mark between the fifth and sixth years of the registration. Registrations are valid for ten years and then renewable for additional ten year periods as long as you are continuing to use the mark. Also, you will be required to enforce your marks from third parties who use it without your permission in order to maintain the rights you have. Cease and desist letters and sometimes litigation will be necessary to ensure that you are fulfilling your obligations as required by the USPTO.

Please note that there are costs to complete a federal registration including outside counsel feels that average around $1,000 per mark and USPTO filing fees that are around $275 per registration class.
